November 10, 2015-Every year since 1976, the third Thursday in November marks the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout, a day when smokers are encouraged to quit for the day and make a plan to quit for good.

“If somebody could quit for one day, then they could realize that maybe they could quit for a lifetime”, said Mary Lough, Health System Manager with the American Cancer Society.


In the United States, tobacco use is responsible for almost one in five deaths, equating to about 480,000 deaths annually, according to the American Cancer Society.

Supporting loved ones when they’re trying to end their tobacco dependence will help increase their odds of success. The Tennessee Tobacco QuitLine, 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669), is available seven days a week in both English and Spanish. “College is an age where people initiate smoking”.

Jones assures smokers that it’s never too late to quit.

The rule would require more than 3,100 public housing agencies to go smoke-free within several years.

The percentage of adult Americans who smoke has dropped significantly since 42 percent of adults smoked in 1965. More than half attempt to quit each year.
